This is one of the cleanest highly collectible 1953 Gibson Goldtop Les Paul guitars we have run across in our 40 years of dealing in vintage guitars. 1952 was the first year of production for the solid body Les Paul. Characteristic of 1952 and early 1953 Gibson did not serialize the guitar. It has a carved maple top and a mahogany body. The glossy mahogany neck is in very nice condition. There are 22 frets with nine trapezoid inlays on the rosewood fretboard. Both the top and neck have single ply creme binding. It has a 24 3/4" neck scale and is 1 11/16" wide at the nut. Silk screening on the black headstock in gold lettering is the model Les Paul along with a pearloid Gibson logo. Electronics include two original soapbar P90 pickups with creme covers, a three way pickup selector on the upper left bout and two volume and two tone controls on the lower right bout all with gold numbered barrel knobs. Other features include nickel plated parts, dark brown plastic back covers, dual strap buttons, Kluson tuners (no name on gear cover) stamped 2356766 Pat Applied on the back and plastic buttons, a trapeze tailpiece with strings wrapping underneath stamped Pat Pending on the bottom, two ply black truss rod cover, and a single ply creme two screw creme pickguard. All of the pots, caps and the switch appear to be original. Our luthier replaced the lead on the bridge pickup and rewired the bridge pot using all of the original parts. Two solder joints have been resoldered and the caps have been dipped in wax. Other than these minor changes the guitar appears to be all original. We have owned this guitar for several decades. There are some small dings on the back edge of the guitar, extremely minimal buckle marks, two small paint chips on the headstock, and light weather checking on the top. The original frets are in amazingly great condition. The comfortable neck profile is perfect, not too big and not too small. The weight is 8.8 lbs. It has a well balanced warm tone with unique characteristics of the combined P90 pickups and trapeze tailpiece. The P90s have plenty of output. This guitar is working perfectly and plays great. It is in exceptionally fine condition and is a testament to the beauty and design of the first Les Pauls. It comes with the original brown flat top Gibson hardshell case with four latches, Gibson badge and pink lining. Also included is the original tan hang tag with brown lettering.
