68 Les Pauls seem to be consistently great. They underwent some interesting changes in a relatively short period of time so there are a number of different 68 and 69 iterations. Some early ones have the crown inlay and some don't. Some have a factory misplaced strap button and some don't. All of the 68's and many 69's have the one piece neck and body and the long neck tenon. All 68's have the small headstock. Early 69's have it but most don't. It's confusing. Here's what I look for...one piece neck and one piece body. I've had quite a few of them in the past and never had a bad one. This one is a very early 68 (501xxx) and shows some wear in the top and back but is in over all very good shape. Big fat neck (1.70+ at the nut and .91" at the first fret. That's big. And hot...8K plus pickups. It had Grovers at some point but now has proper vintage Klusons again and no extra holes. Pot codes are 45th week of 67. It has been re-fretted and a new nut has been installed. Desirable small headstock-one piece body and neck. It has the factory "high" strap button hole. The upper strap button was improperly placed at the factory in the very early LP's and everybody moved it. Previous owner scratched his name into the back plates. Original case with replaced handle. I like 68 gold tops better than most of the 50's goldtops I've had. .
