The first reissue Les Paul gold tops were released in 1968 and are probably the best guitar to come out of the Gibson factory since 1965. The fat, wide neck was back. The original Les Paul body style was back and folks were buying them. But Gibson, being Gibson, couldn't leave well enough alone and started making changes in order to squeeze an extra dollar or two down to the bottom line. By early 69 the headstock got larger, the dot in the "i" in Gibson disappeared, the neck tenon got smaller, the one piece body disappeared and the one piece neck went away. All downgrades, if you ask me. But the 68's and the early 69's are great. This one is probably from February of 69 and still has the long neck tenon, the one piece neck and the one piece body, the long tenon and the old style P90's (not the clear plastic bobbins). Pot codes are late 68. The dot in the "i" is gone and it has the big headstock but that's just cosmetics. It's the other stuff that really counts. This one has the tone and the feel and is light for a 68/69 Les Paul at 8 lbs 13 ounces. It's clean and all original and a great player. You could go spend $25K on a 50's GT but this one will sound as good and maybe even better. Original black with yellow case.
