Summary: This first year Deluxe was produced before the changes that Gibson has been criticized for in the 70s. The body is solid mahogany—no pancake! The neck is three-piece mahogany (before the switch to maple) and does not wear a volute. All around, a fantastic vintage Les Paul.
Body: Solid mahogany. Bound maple top. Gold top finish.
Neck: Three-piece mahogany. Slim neck profile. Bound rosewood fretboard with MOP parallelogram inlays.
Pickups/Hardware: Two mini-humbuckers. Two volume and two tone controls with gold top hat knobs. Cream plastics (pickguard, pickup rings, pickup selector surround). ABR tuneomatic bridge with nylon saddles and stop tail piece. Kluson Deluxe tuners (two marked “Gibson Deluxe”).
Cosmetics: This guitar has aged well and the gold top has taken on a nice patina. There are typical signs of playwear--some finish scratches on the body and neck, dings along the perimeter of the body—but nothing particularly heavy, and no breaks or repairs. It has the look of a well- cared for but played vintage guitar.
Playability: This guitar has a comfortably slim neck that plays smoothly with low action and no dead spots. Frets are in good shape, with slight wear apparent on the first few. The two mini-humbuckers dish out a focused, punchy tone versatile for many styles.
Weight: 9 lb, 3 oz.
