One word came to mind as I prepared to write about this Les Paul: joy. Not every one, but some guitars will catch Lee's eye (as some basses catch mine) and he's gets all itchy to play them after they're cleaned, restrung, photographed and set up. Every once in a while, he'll grab one before I've taken pictures and that means I get to yell at him. It's a midget on giant crime, I assure you, but it it brings me great pleasure to bust his balls a little bit and it keeps things in order around here. I'm Kirk and he's Spock. So, for some reason, he got it in his mind that he wanted to put this Les Paul through his '68 Plexi half stack and that means, you guessed it- it was garage test time! I love 'em, but it's cold as you know what here and I was not opening that door for him or anybody else. It lets the heat out, for Pete's sake and gas ain't no cheaper in Georgia than anywhere else...

So I got this girl all cleaned up, set up and it was time. Lee came up and grabbed the guitar and headed right back down into the office without a word (that meant he was gettin' itchy to play.) I was up in the garage, cleaning a Jazz bass and bracing myself for the 100- watt assault I knew was coming. And, I am real familiar with this particular head so if you're a Plexi fan, this beast does not disappoint. Lee's had this thing forever- from way back in his band days when you could drag a Marshall stack into a club and the owner would ask you, "What? You only got one?" Anyway, I'm prepared for the death tone of a running chainsaw to pierce my eardrums, but strangely, it did not come. Instead, I heard the low purr of a guitar being played at a relatively low volume. Sounded good. Sounded warm and as I was busy with my work, it dawned on me that he was going on for awhile. Every now and then, I'd hear a small boost in volume if he was monkeying around on a solo and there was a chorus pedal in there too, but he was running through everything from his favorite, Gary Moore to some old Judas Priest to stuff I didn't even know. Finally, I couldn't help myself and I eased down into the office to see what was going on. Lee was sitting in front of a Fender Hot Rode Deluxe, playing at low volume and smiling. That's how I came up with the first sentence of this description- my boy was enjoying playing this guitar and it occurred to me that if every instrument we sold did this for somebody out there, then we have done our job. To put a guitar or bass into someone's hands and it bring them joy should be the goal for everyone in this business and to see him smiling made me smile and I turned and quietly went back to my work. Coming out of that room, with him playing this guitar allowed me to find in my tasks what he had found in his playing: joy...
