From the personal collection of Les Paul…..
His very own 1974 Gibson Les Paul Recording
This is a rare opportunity to own a Les Paul Les Paul.
The late great Lester Polsfuss, aka Les Paul, was a great pioneer, innovator, musician, and person. Involved in the development of, and representing the Gibson’s first artist signature solidbody electric guitar in 1952, Les Paul further refined his guitars to his own personal specifications and requirements. In the late 1960’s, along came the Personal and Professional with unique and innovative electronics. This culminated in 1971 with the release of the Recording, the guitar of choice of Mr. Paul for the rest of his illustrious career. Into his 90’s could he be regularly seen playing Les Paul Recording on Monday nights at NYC’s famed Iridium Jazz Club.
In June 2012, Julien’s Auctions conducted a high profile event for “Property from the Estate of Les Paul”. This particular guitar is of that provenance, with full documentation.
Condition wise, the guitar has been played…a lot, and probably has many stories to tell.
It is exactly the way that Mr. Paul had left it. Refretted, changed bridge and tailpiece, missing pickguard, tiny crack on control cavity pickguard, missing a portion of binding on headstock. Multiple scattered dings, scrapes, and fine checking, with small area of buckle rash on the back. No breaks, including headstock.
The guitar has not been played or even plugged in since purchase in order to preserve the “originality” and mojo. If the future owner wishes to play the guitar, there is a good chance that some of Mr. Paul’s DNA still resides on the guitar and could potentially assimilate with the new owner for added greatness!
Mr. Paul stored the guitar in a padded gig bag, which is affixed with his inventory label.
There were a few other Recording (non- prototype) guitars the auction. The majority sold for higher, with the highest just under 45K, and average price 22K. A prototype model sold for 180K! None of those will likely surface again in the near future, and definitely not in the price range as currently offered.
