Here is a 1956 Gibson Les Paul Special in the original tv yellow from the second year of production for this model. The distinctive single cut Les Paul Special, built in Kalamzoo MI, was first introduced in 1955 and rapidly became popular. It is estimated that Gibson built 1345 LP Specials in 1956. As part of our museum collection since 1979 this guitar has been out of circulation for 34 plus years. This single cutaway solid body electric guitar has a mahogany body and neck, limed mahogany finish, and a bound rosewood fretboard. The fretboard has 22 frets with 10 dot inlays, a scale length of 24 3/4", and a nut width of 1 11/16". It weighs 8.6 pounds. A five digit serial number, 6 5012, is ink stamped on the back of the headstock. The black painted headstock has "Les Paul Special" silkscreened in gold lettering along with a pearloid Gibson logo. Other features include a four ply black beveled edge pickguard, volume and tone controls for each pickup with black top hat knobs, and a pickup selector switch on the upper left bound with a black surround. The tuners have been changed to individual chrome tuning keys that resemble Schallers. The original holes where the Klusons were mounted remain visible. A brass nut was added. Early Specials were notorious for having the wrap around stud tailpiece/bridge lift up. We surmise the adjustable chrome bridge was added to correct the lift. The chrome bridge sits in the location of the original tailpiece/bridge which was relocated 1 1/2" below. Instead of wrapping over the bridge the strings now go over the bridge and through the tailpiece. Original tailpiece holes were filled in with wood (see photo). The neck pickup has the original P90 soapbar pickup with black cover. All of the wiring on the neck pickup appears to be original. The bridge pickup has been changed to an clear P90 pickup with a brass back probably a Gibson pickup from the 1960s or 70s. This guitar has a limited number of random dings mostly around the perimeter and a 2 1/2" worn area on the upper back edge of the guitar. The back of the neck has seven small dings and small worn area. Overall for the age of the instrument the body is in nice condition. The original frets are in great shape and the fretboard is in excellent condition as well. It has a mild, comfortable C shaped neck. All the electronics work just fine and the guitar has been professionally set up. The P90 pickups have a fat, rich, velvety tone with a throaty midrange. Guitarists who have played a Gibson Les Paul Special include Bob Marley, John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix. The guitar comes with a new black Gibson hardshell case.
