Description
Gibson’s Les Paul Special model, introduced in 1955, was the next trim level offered in the Les Paul line after the Model (Standard) in 1952, and the Junior/TV model and Custom in 1954. The Special utilized the Junior’s solid Mahogany body with single cutaway shape but was finished in what Gibson called Limed Mahogany which appeared white on black and white television sets. A neck pickup with accompanying volume and tone circuitry was also added making the Special an affordable but still professionally playable instrument. The Special was sold in this configuration until 1958 when both the Junior and Special transitioned to a double cutaway body style. Gibson’s surviving shipping records indicate that at least 1,452 Les Paul Specials were shipped in 1957.

This one family owned, uncirculated 1957 Gibson Les Paul Special has survived in wonderful condition and retains all its original parts with the exception of replaced tuner buttons after the originals crumbled. It has suffered no damage or repairs. The finish is still vibrant and exhibits very light occasional checking. The electronics too are original and function as intended. The neck is straight and the frets are full height with almost no wear. The truss rod nut was lubricated and adjusted for proper neck relief. We sourced an era correct case since the family discarded this Special’s original chipboard case after it deteriorated. We’re confident you’ll enjoy playing this clean Gibson Les Paul Special.
