This is a very nice example of an all original 1958 Gibson Les Paul Special in TV yellow. It is commonly thought that the TV yellow finish was developed to be black and white TV friendly. 1958 was the last year for the single cuataway, flat top Les Paul Special that was first introduced in 1955. The serial number, 8 4831, is stamped in black on the back of the headstock. It has a slab mahogany body and weighs 7.8 pounds. The one piece bound mahogany neck has a Brazilian rosewood fretboard with 22 frets and ten dot inlays. The neck scale length is 24 3/4" with a 1 11/16" nut. A pearloid Gibson logo along with a silk screened gold Les Paul Special can be found on the black headstock. Other features include a wrap around stud/tailpiece loop-over bridge combination, Kluson deluxe three on plate single line tuning keys with plastic buttons, nickel plated parts, black five ply beveled edge pickguard, and four black bonnet knobs. Unique to 1958, the rhythm/treble switch has a large rubber washer surround. There are two P90 pickups with black covers, two volume and two tone control knobs on the lower right bout and a three way switch on the upper left bout. All of the pots appear to be original. We were able to read the numbers on the bridge tone pot, 134808 500K, made by Centra/Lab the eight week of 1958. There is some minor finger wear on finger board near the first two frets. The original frets have plenty of wear remaining. The original TV beige yellow finish looks quite vibrant. There are a number of dings on the top, sides and back along with age appropriate weather checking, only very minor buckle wear on the back, typical edge wear on the headstock, and contact wear on the back side edge on the guitar. The back of the neck has three small dings but is smooth and attractive with visible wood grain. It has a typical very minor wing crack. Two screws have been replaced on the control plate cover and two on the jackplate cover. Our luthier resoldered the jack switch connections when he corrected the switch position which had been flipped upside down by a previous owner. Otherwise, all soldering appears to be original. This Les Paul Special has a wonderful sweet tone with an amazing range, a nice full low end, great resonance, and is incredibly musical. The mid sized 1958 neck is comfortable, smooth, buttery, and fast. The guitar has great intonation. Both P90 pickups have a strong output with a full tone. Everything is working perfectly on the instrument. This is the best playing Les Paul Special we have had in the shop. Bob Marley is counted among guitarists that favored the Les Paul Special. It comes with a new Gibson '59 reissue case that is brown on the outside with a plush pink lining.
