Every once in a while you find something that attracts your attention that is far from the norm. Gibson made some “Map” shaped guitars back in the early 80’s. Most had a Gibson logo…some were made in the USA w/the Epiphone moniker. These are very desirable today. Let’s go back to 1998, a good friend of ours, Tommy Salamoni, who worked for MAE Music in Ft.Lauderdale, along w/his buddy Dave May, were going thru the Gibson Factory putting in some orders & seeing what was laying around that could be purchased immediately. Tommy came across this beautiful Red, White & Blue Map guitar. They were not making them at the time. In fact Rick Gembar, Gibson’s head of the Custom Shop, had this beauty made for himself. It was not for sale at that time. Somehow Tommy talked them into selling to him for his friend Dave & the rest is history. Dave was a very happy camper until about 2002 when Dave came into our shop & we acquired it happily. The story goes that Rick Gember came back to his office & found out they sold it to Tommy & he was pissed off. At that moment, he ordered Gibson to make 50 more copies to sell to the public. They were not made in 1998, but made around the year 2000 & all of those Map guitars had a White Star inlay on their headstocks. Ours did not have that Star inlay. It was a special order for Rick & remains the only one like it. This is a true 1 of a kind factory made USA Map guitar made for Gibson Royalty. It is like new & has its original hard case.
