NO FON. Originally set up for Hawaiian play the Gibson Roy Smeck Stage Deluxe makes a powerhouse dreadnought when converted to standard play. This one was expertly converted by Mark Tossman. The conversion process involves installing new frets to replace the flat position lines, recarving the original rosewood bridge to the correct height, new compensated saddle, recarving the neck to a modified V with a 1 ¾” nut with localized refinishing, lowered and re-slotted nut. In the process, a new bridge plate of the correct shape and material was made to replace a non-original rosewood plate. A loose brace was reglued. This is a very handsome guitar with a bound, finely-grained red spruce top, dark stained mahogany back and sides, firestripe guard, and stenciled logo. Inside there are two lightly scalloped tone bars, the preferred configuration among Smeck fans. There is a slight distortion of the top behind the bridge on the bass side most likely occurring during it’s loose brace period. Overall very clean, there is some playwear from its Hawaiian period. Additionally, dobro master Orville Johnson borrowed it to record “The Sweeter the Juice” with Laura Love and played it in dobro tunings. It’s a great sounding example that presents very well. It has lots of volume with lots of sustain and a warm woody sound with 80/20 bronze strings. They are favored by Jackson Browne, Ry Cooder, Derek Trucks, among others. It’s priced to reflect bridge plate and distortion but is otherwise a clean, original and great sounding instrument. Comes with a newer, good hardshell case.
