SALE PENDING. FON 661C. Friends, here is a terrific example of Gibson’s slope shouldered, deep bodied Jumbo originally set up for Hawaiian play and expertly converted to standard by Alan Perlman. The thick neck, deep body and light construction make for a powerhouse 30s dreadnought at a bargain price. It is, essentially, a 12-fret Gibson Jumbo. This one had considerable playing time in its original setup but aside from some playwear and a ding or two it remains architecturally solid with no cracks or abuse. In the conversion process, the neck was reset, frets replaced the old position markers in the correct position, and the original bridge was filled and reslotted. The neck was recarved to a 1-13/16” nut with localized and invisibly blended refinishing. The endpin, bridge pins and tuners are original. There’s a new nut and saddle. The top and back are simply bound, w/b/w rosette, open book headstock with stenciled logos, and simple dot fret board markers. The classic Gibson 30’s sunburst, firestripe guard, dark mahogany back, sides and neck and the original purple-lined “red line” case make this a tall, dark and handsome package indeed. People praise the ’34 Smecks with their scalloped tone bars and small sound hole but this ’37, with its tapered tone bars and 4” sound hole is truly one of the best I’ve had.
