Description
Up for sale, a 1962 Gibson SG Special in excellent condition and in perfect working order. This SG was professionally refinished long ago in gloss black lacquer, which now has the character and patina of a vintage finish. Featherweight at 6lbs 9oz and extremely acoustically resonant and lively, this guitar barks with incredible authority and clarity from the pair of stock P-90 pickups. There's a real chime to these pickups and when you roll the bridge pickup tone control back just a touch, things sweeten up in a very musical way. Never too brash, but with plenty of twang on tap, the bridge pickup balances out well with the equally clear, yet warmer tones in the neck position. A guitar that interacts well with a variety of vintage tube amps, this SG is equally at home with a small Fender combo as it is through a Hiwatt stack for the quintessential Who "Live at Leeds" tone (white jumpsuit sold separately). Professionally setup with low, slinky action and 10-46 strings, this SG special plays extremely well and will deliver the goods for stage and studio work.

The one-piece mahogany neck has a fairly slender C profile with Gibson's full 1 11/16" pre-'65 nut width. The neck profile stays consistent in depth as you move into the higher registers of the fretboard and plays effortlessly. The original wide/flat Gibson fretwire is intact, and the frets have been recently leveled and crowned, currently showing only the faintest wear beneath the plain strings in the first position and no wear up the neck. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard has pearl dot inlays and clean binding that's aged to a light shade of cream. The fretboard itself shows light wear into the wood beneath the plain strings on frets 1-3 as well. The guitar retains the original nut along with a set of era-correct Kluson Deluxe single line tuning machines. These tuners turn smoothly and hold pitch as they should, also boasting their original white buttons. The guitar had been fitted with Grovers in the past, and appropriate conversion bushings were installed so that the shafts of the correct Klusons currently on the guitar would fit snugly.

This SG did have the extremely common heel fracture that often plagues these models, and this fracture was expertly repaired prior to the refinish. Given that the headstock no longer retains a serial number, many of the most conclusive ways to date this guitar relate to the neck. The shaping of the neck where it meets the body is unique to 1961-early 63, and the profile is the particularly slender style associated with most SGs from '62 and further verified by the pre-65 nut width and nickel pole pieces which would also transition to chrome by the middle of the decade.

All of the electronics work as they should, and the wiring harness is a genuine Gibson replacement, with CTS pots that date to '78. The original bridge inserts screw cleanly into the body and there are a few turns left on the inserts for future action adjustment if desired. The wraparound bridge is a modern reissue that matches the specs of the original, and the reflector cap knobs are modern are well. Both pickups are original, with stock windings and healthy output, and the pickup covers and pickguard are original to the guitar too.

Cosmetically, the black lacquer refinish was very well executed and done long ago, retaining the original deep contours on the horns. There is light checking on the finish across the entire body and neck and moderate buckle rash on the back in a fairly targeted area south of the strap button. There are also a few assorted small nicks and finish scratches on the body, but overall this SG presents very well and has a sleek, elegant look with the black on black cosmetics.

A modern Gibson brown tolex hardshell case with plush pink interior is included.
