2006 Gibson SJ-100 Natural
The Gibson SJ-100 is best described as the player’s jumbo, with an easy action neck and amazing balance. If you are familiar with the iconic Gibson Jumbo SJ-200 series, you understand that one of the few structural differences from this guitar is the use of maple for the back and sides for the SJ-200. You might call this a working man’s (or woman’s) SJ-200: it is the same size and scale but less ornate, the same Sitka Spruce top but with the added punch of Bubinga (sometimes called African Rosewood) back and sides. The SJ-100 is a more affordable, luxury Super Jumbo with an active transducer pickup, and this one comes with the original Gibson hard-shell case that fits like a glove.
This guitar has serial number 00986034, which pretty reliably dates it to the 98th day (April 8th) of 2006—exactly 14 years ago today as I write this; it was the 34th Gibson made that day. It has a solid spruce top with Bubinga back and sides; a rosewood bridge; and a 15/20-fret bound rosewood finger board with pearl dot inlay; a 1.725” nut and a 25 ½” scale. It has full body binding, top and back, the famous “moustache bridge,” multi-stripe purfling, and a multi-stripe rosette. While this guitar came from the factory with no pick guard, after-market SJ-200-style pick guards are readily available and easily added. The blackface headstock features an inlaid script Gibson logo, backed by the classic Kluson-style tuners which are so much a part of the Gibson tradition.
There are no structural issues: the top seam has been re-glued in the lower bout below the bridge, but there are no actual cracks anywhere. The beautifully figured Bubinga back and sides show virtually no dents or dings, the frets and fretboard show no visible wear, and the action is set up at a perfect 3/32” at the 12th fret low E. Despite its almost new appearance, it still looks and plays like what it is: a great Gibson acoustic-electric jumbo guitar which is primed to play the hard-driving music for which it was made. Of course, with the built-in pickup accessed through the end pin jack this already very strong guitar can be played loud enough to be heard in the Roman Coliseum.
The deluxe case is clearly original, and the exterior is in very good shape. The handle, interior pocket, and hardware are in great shape as well. Its hard shell is virtually invulnerable, its royal blue plush interior is spotless and odor-free, the Gibson name is proudly displayed on the top, and it certainly offers outstanding protection for this classic guitar.
