1953 Gibson SJ Sunburst

Sunburst, small guard. This guitar has seen some repairs but has that deep thump you expect from a top of the line Gibson with tucked braces. Big thunder.

Here are our observations: It’s had a recent neck reset with a tall saddle and low action. However, the heel hangs over the back of the body a 32nd of an inch. You’ll never feel when you play it. Has a repaired heel crack done long ago which might explain that. The two braces inside the sound hole are replaced. It was pro level work with pointed pyramid shape. The other back braces are original. The four inlays above the 12th fret are replaced. Don’t you love a good honest report? There are only small cracks, the previously mentioned heel and a small pickguard crack, all repaired. The tuners are repro and the headstock is stamped 2nd. It has never had a strap button put on. Has a Brazilian bridge and fingerboard . A great ’53 era neck, nice and round. The tone is crisp yet authoritative, the bass like thunder in the distance. Putting your ear up to the sound hole while playing is like being next to a speaker. It’s very loud. Comes with the original soft brown case. Could be a ’53 or ’54 but small pickguard era.
