The Thunderbird, introduced in 1963, was designed by an automobile designer who had worked for Chrysler. 1965 saw a change in design to a "non-reverse body", which was replaced by a "reverse body" a few years later, and production was temporarily halted in 1969. In 1976, it was reintroduced as a commemorative model for the bicentennial of the founding of the United States of America, and was sold until 1979, when it was discontinued again. The Thunderbird IV was introduced in 1987. The 2001 Thunderbird has a through-neck construction with nine layers of mahogany and walnut for excellent long sustain, and a mahogany body for rich depth in the mid and low registers.
The impression of this instrument is a powerful, rounded low midrange that is truly "Thunderbird" in character. The nuance when played with a pick is unique.
