One of the coolest and most-beloved guitar models we see coming through the shop is the classic Gretsch Tennessean model. This model is arguably most famous for being the guitar George Harrison of the Beatles played in the film “Help!” as well as countless live performances. It sports a hollow laminated maple single cutaway body with a gorgeously thin brown walnut nitrocellulose finish and painted F-“holes” as well as a stock “Gretsch-branded” Bisgby vibrato system. The body on the slimmer side for a hollow body (2” thick by 16” wide). The guitar weighs in at a comfortable 7 pounds 2 ounces. A serial number of “78123” is impressed into the top of the headstock. The two-piece maple neck fits beautifully into the palm of the player’s hand, having what could be best described as a “C” shape-esque neck profile. It measures about 1 11/16th” at the nut with a rosewood finger board and pearloid “thumb-nail” inlays. Counting the “zero” fret it has a total of 23 frets. The frets look to be replacements and have lots of great playing days ahead! The Gretsch Hi-Lo-Tron pickups sound nice and clear without losing that key punch that tends to light up a well-tuned tube amp. The open-back tuning machines, chrome steel bridge, ebony bridge base, pickguard, pickups, knobs, and switches all look to be period-correct for this model. Cosmetically the body is in incredible shape for its age with some light-to-average checking and average playwear. The binding has yellowed nicely but has a couple separation points around the body and neck. There is some light wear on the hardware and Bigsby. The original pickguard has a small crack where the lower crew appears to have been over-tightened at some point. It has been professionally set-up by our in-house tech for round wound 10s and plays like a dream! The Bigsby is nicely responsive, not too loose but not sticky either. This guitar came to us from a true Fab Four fanatic who played in many Beatles tribute acts so it would be excellent for anyone playing George to any group of Johns, Ringos, and Pauls. And even for you non-Beatles nuts out there it is a great thin hollow body for everything from blues to surf to punk and indie and beyond! Includes original hard shell case.
