As I recall, it was another late night just sitting around the house, eating cheese doodles and noodling on the guitar. The T.V. was on TCM and somewhere between smacking and noodling I heard what I thought was a distinctive sound from a bygone era. The movie was entitled " Because They're Young." As I glanced up, I saw a guy with a Gretsch just tearing the fretboard off his guitar in what appeared to be a gymnasium. The scene was just as you would expect: straight from "Grease" with plenty of duck-tails, pigtails and tight sweaters (think "Laverne and Shirley.") This guy killing his guitar was none other than Duane Eddy and what I was witnessing was the incarnation of the first true guitar hero. If my generation was all about Page, Frehley and Van Halen, then this guy was exactly that to his generation. The term associated with him is "twang" and there is no doubt he possessed that in spades. Just think, there would be no Beatles without "The Shadows" and this virtuoso's was all over Harrison and McCartney. I speak of influence and inspiration. This maple, hollow-body electric guitar with DynaSonic pickups hearkens back to a day when guitarists worked for every note they got. Brain Setzer knew this all too well and there in no doubt who influenced him. This lacquered twang box is for those of you that just get the origins of Rock-n-Roll. As for me and my cheese doodle revelations? I, of course cleaned off the remains of my delicious snack, picked my guitar back up and tried my best to cop a lick from Duane. Trying to score a lick from him would be like a blind man painting a picture of the Golden Gate bridge. I giggled to myself (that's what you do when you know you're outgunned.) The good news folks is, there are lessons on YouTube and if only I had the time or talent, I could do it, right? Yeah right, there's only one that can play like that and the rest of us can just watch. Well, and eat cheese doodles.
