Description

These are among the rarest of pre-war Grover tuning machines, a 100% original set of gold-plated, hand-engraved G-98s from the mid-1930s. They were given to me over forty years ago by someone who was converting a Martin F-9 archtop guitar to a flat top instrument and I’ve had them in storage, untouched, ever since. The original neck was broken and not being used and the owner wanted modern tuners on his new guitar, and so he had no use for these. The engraving on both sides of each button is of the “Cat’s Eye” design surrounded by floral work and what some engravers call “wiggle cut” design around all the edges; the back plates also have wiggle cut engraving on all edges. Better yet, these tuners are of the more desirable kind with a machine screw in the center of each gear making them extremely solid in operation, rather than the later, looser type with the ends of the posts peened over onto the backs of the gears. Condition is excellent with the plating totally intact, needing only some careful minor cleaning, or not, as you like. All six original bushings and twelve original slot-head mounting screws are included. This type of tuning machine has also been seen on better pre-war Gibson Super-400s. An extremely rare find. $2500
