Any of you out there remember George Gobel? George started as a country music singer and comedian on the WLS Barn Dance around 1940 and eventually became a notable TV wag, variety show host and guitar player in the 1950s. Useta say “Well I’ll be a dirty bird!” far too often. Well George at one point had a Gibson guitar model of his own, a pretty special one based on the L-5C but with a slightly thinner body, and always in what could only be called an Improbably Red finish. They’re exceedingly rare, but John Sebastian, of Lovin’ Spoonful fame, had the folks at Heritage, the people who took over the old Gibson factory building in Kalamazoo, Michigan, build him one about twenty years ago and this is it. John is letting a very few of his instruments go to new homes now and he’s given us this one to sell for him. It’s got a carved, tuned solid spruce top and a carved, tuned solid flamed maple back with matching sides, better, I’d say, than the originals. The slightly shallower 2-12” deep body, combined with the floating Armstrong pickup give it a big, bold and bright tone that can be found nowhere else. Ebony fingerboard and bridge of course. In perfect, near-mint condition, it also comes with a signed, hand-written letter from John on his personal stationery describing the guitar and his ownership and use of it on stage. A wonderful and unique instrument, not to be duplicated anywhere. $3995 w/ohsc
