Given the incredible popularity of the Soloist, some guitarists sought an instrument that boasted Jackson’s trademark speed and high performance in a bolt-on-neck model similar to those made by the company’s older sibling, Charvel®.
Jackson designers responded circa 1986 by creating a bolt-on brother to the Soloist featuring a slightly smaller body that lightened and further streamlined an already sleek design. This new model was officially christened the Dinky—a name that had already been in use for a couple years relating to several Charvel guitars also informally known as “San Dimas” models. The Dinky was certainly smaller, but its success was enormous and immediate, and it has flourished as one of Jackson’s most popular designs ever since.
