The original version of the Carve Top Standard John built for himself (while working at Rudy's in NYC) and ended up in Mark's hands and much later became known as the "MK I".
The desire for an instrument like this was so Mark would not need to make as many guitar changes during the set, an instrument that would deliver both classic single coil tones and the growl of a humbucker. It's first appearance was at the Mandella Concert in London 06/11/88 where Dire Straits was the closing act with Eric Clapton paying tribute to Nelson Mandella turning 70.
