Up for sale, an early 1960's Kay Swingmaster model K673 in exceptional, 100% original and in perfect working order. This rare Kay model is easily one of the most eye-catching and cool instruments ever offered by the Chicago-based company, with a trio of P-35 "Kleenex Box" single coil pickups wound for Kay by Gibson, checkerboard binding, and a four-way rotary pickup selector switch to engage any or all of the pickups. This particular instrument is a one-owner gem, and the story connected with this instrument was that the owner passed away soon after its purchase and it was kept by his wife for decades, unplayed and safe until we recently acquired it. With its fully hollow maple body, this Kay weighs a mere 7lbs and the acoustic tone is quite cutting and clear. The Kleenex Box pickups have a rich sound with a bit of scooped midrange and sweet top end chime, for all intents and purposes a tonal middle ground between a P-90 and a Jazzmaster single coil. We've had this guitar professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar, but in truth this vintage gem needed very little to be dialed in to perfection with low, comfortable action.

The neck has a medium soft V shaped profile, and the neck has enough roundness to it that it feels more like a C, especially in the higher registers of the fretboard. The bound Brazilian rosewood fretboard features pearl block inlays and original frets that have their full original height and no discernible wear. The stock nut measures 1 5/8" in width, and although there's a small chip on the bass side edge of the nut, the low E string still sits securely in its slot. On the headstock, the original Kay music stand truss rod cover is present and the gold silkscreen graphics are near mint. The original Grover open-back tuners with butterbean buttons are also near mint and turn quite smoothly. The shield inlay is also present on the headstock face and shows only the faintest surface oxidation of the metal.

All of the electronics work as they should, and the four-way rotary switch engages each pickup individually or all three single coils at once for a particularly meaty and full sound. Each pickup has dedicated Volume and Tone knobs, so you can dial in each pickup to taste for a particularly wide palette of sounds. All of the original hardware is present including the six transparent DeArmond knobs, factory silver painted selector switch knob, adjustable rosewood bridge and chrome trapeze tailpiece. The stock "flag" pickguard is still bright white as well and attached with its original bracket. The sunburst finish is vibrant and unfaded, accented by checkerboard binding on the top, and central to the burst on the back, the maple has some faint quilt figuring. As one would expect with a true vintage "case queen," there's virtually no checking on the nitro lacquer finish, and only a few faint scuffs on the back of the instrument. Other extremely minor wear includes a bit of paint missing on the selector switch knob, and a couple tiny flecks of missing paint around the parameter of the screws that secure the neck.

The original two-tone chipboard gray/blonde case is included. This case has its original latches, working handle, and a plush red interior.
