Description

Offered here is Kevin Kopp's version of the Nick Lucas (Special) model which was produced between 1927 and 1936 by Gibson. Named for an artist whose career spanned nearly seven decades starting in the early 1910's, the original Nick Lucas model was itself based on the venerable old Gibson L-series guitar, but was modified with a deeper body for enhanced output.

Kevin Kopp's NL guitar is a 14-fret instrument with a 24.75" string scale. It uses hide glue construction and solid bent interior kerfling. The body measures 10.25" wide at the upper bout, 8.5" at the waist and 15" at the lower bout. It has a maximum depth of 4.75" at the heel. This guitar has an Adirondack Spruce top, Curly Maple for the back and sides and a Mahogany neck. It has a C-shaped neck with depth measurements of .85" at the first fret increasing to .90" at the ninth fret. The Ebony fretboard has a 14" radius, a 1-3/4" bone nut and fancy, period-correct inlays. It has a Rosewood bridge with a compensated bone saddle and 2-1/4" string spacing. The tuners are nickel Waverly open-backs. The guitar has a full-body sunburst finish consisting of nitrocellulose lacquer over an alcohol-based stain which gives Kevin's guitars a vintage-correct look which is unique to his brand.

Don't expect dread-level lows, but I think you will be amazed at the bass output of this little guitar along with nicely balanced mids and a very clear high-end. The lush and nice overall tonal balance of this guitar can be attributed both to it's relatively deep body and to the tone woods and construction techniques which the Kevin Kopp has utilized for this gorgeous instrument. Check out the provided sound sample to hear what this beauty sounds like.

The playability of this instrument is top notch. It likes fingers or a flat pick equally well and responds nicely to your level of attack. The setup on the guitar is optimal, with ninth fret string heights of 6/64" and 4/64" on the low and high sides, respectively.

This guitar was built in 2014 but the fine condition of the guitar indicate that it has seen little play. The frets are spotless and the body and neck show only light evidence of play and handling. A couple string change scuffs on the headstock overlay are about the only flaws of any significance and even these are difficult to find. The pickguard's condition indicates any play it has received was fingerstyle. It comes in it's original TKL case, also in superb condition.

Kevin Kopp is known for his fine reproductions of Gibson style guitars. If you haven't yet tried one of his creations, this lovely Nick Lucas style guitar would be a great guitar to start with. A very high quality small body guitar indeed!
