L.R. Baggs M1 Active Pickup

Active magnetic soundhole pickup for acoustic guitar.

What we think:

The M1 Active is Baggs' most popular pickup, and it is pretty easy to see why. Simple, reliable, and very resistant to feedback, it is the perfect acoustic pickup for any stage. The M1 is used regularly by members of our guitar department and it has definitely proven to be roadworthy--but with the M1 Active you don't have to sacrifice your tone on the altar of dependability.

The M1 captures a wealth of sonic information and produces an amplified signal that is lifelike and detailed. The top end is beautifully clear without being metallic or thin, and the midrange is very well-balanced while still retaining punch and definition. Many of the midrange frequencies that create boxiness or feedback in most acoustic pickup systems are not an issue here, and you will find that very little EQ tweaking is necessary.

Another important feature of the M1 Active is its resistance to feedback, which is usually an enormous hurdle for any acoustic performance. To test this, I took a Lowden O35c SLE equipped with an M1 and ran it through the L.R. Baggs Acoustic Reference amplifier and cranked it. With my EQ settings and notch filter adjusted a little on the A-Ref I was able to reach enormous volume levels before having any sort of feedback. And not only does the M1 resist feedback, it retains the touch sensitivity and detail that you need for performance on any stage!

The M1 is a humbucking pickup -- with a twist. In a common stacked humbucker, the second, lower coil cancels hum, but doesn't contribute anything positive to the sound. In fact, it can muddy the sound of the main coil. We unlock the second coil. This allows it to make a positive sonic contribution while maintaining the pure open sound of a single coil -- but without the hum.

In the M1, the hum-canceling coil is suspended under the main coil by a tuned support that allows it to move in three dimensions. The primary coil moves with the guitar top and creates a body signal in the suspended secondary coil. This brings the M1 to life, with string and body sound all in one. It's like having a dual pickup system in your soundhole.

We've carefully tuned the support to control motion in all three dimensions. This allows us to selectively add the presence and realism from the body signal while suppressing runaway feedback.
