Description

Norman Blake owned this type model Martin for years both for finger-style and old time flat picking. This Martin 1931 000-18 12 fret guitar is definitely a high end players guitar and nice examples are getting scarce. If it were perfect, it would be $15-17k. It has what appears to be the original ’30’s soft case with it. The nut width is 1-7/8″ but the neck is a shallow .845″ and the neck is a soft “V”, so play-ability is definitely excellent. The action reads 4 and 3 32nds low to high string at the 12th fret. Long scale at 25.4″ and 2-3/8″ string width at the bridge.

This is a very light ebony rod in the neck guitar with a beautiful original finish Adirondack top. The back has two repaired cracks and may have had some light overspray long ago. The sides have had all cracks repaired and probably had light overspray, nothing thick or unsightly done after the repair. There is a 1-3/4″ x 3/4″ mahogany patch on the upper bout of the treble side and a small 5/8″ circular mahogany patch on the treble side towards the bottom. The bridge is slotted with solid pins. There is an extra thin maple wood strip over the original bridge-plate which was worn.

The sound is very deep, deep bass and rich sustained mid-range and high tones across the sound spectrum. The whole guitar just vibrates against your chest. I love these 90 year old light thumpers!!!
