Description

Every acoustic guitar collection needs at least one all-Mahogany instrument. There is nothing like a Mahogany guitar when you are looking for a warm, rich acoustic tone. With this in mind, offered here is a marvelous Martin Custom Shop Mahogany 000-12 Fret completed in 2011.

While loosely based on Martin's far less expensive 000-15M production model, this Custom Shop guitar is different in many respects. First and foremost of course, is that this is a 12-fret instrument, while the production model's neck joins the body at the 14th fret. Other specs on this guitar which you will not find on the lesser model include: higher grades of Mahogany on the top, back and sides; nicer binding and purfling; natural hide glue construction; lighter scalloped 1/4" Golden Era top bracing; full gloss body finish; Black Ebony for the fingerboard and bridge; a 1-3/4" bone nut; a Modified V neck shape (.85"-1.00") with 30's style heel; a lovely Stauffer style bridge with drop-in bone saddle, 2-1/4" string spacing and a matching Stauffer-style fretboard heel; a Madagascar Rosewood headstock overlay; a Delmar tortoise pickguard; grained ivoroid side dots; Gotoh nickel open-back tuners with butterbean knobs; and a five-ply Custom Shop Gieb-style case with satin/velvet shroud.

There is no mistaking this guitar for a production 000-15M as soon as you pick it up and definitely no mistaking it once you played your first chord. This is a much more lightly constructed instrument, with this one weighing just 3.8 pounds. This and the thinner bracing makes for a far more responsive and resonant instrument. The setup is perfect, with 12th fret string heights of 6/64" on the low side and 4/64" on the high side and it plays super easy either flat or finger picked. The real difference between this guitar and it's lower priced brethren is the tone. Please check out the brief sound sample provided herein. You just don't get this warm, woody, classic Martin sound from the lesser model. And for what it's worth, this guitar compares quite favorably in both sound and playability to the $4K+ Santa Cruz 1929 000 I played recently.

While built in 2011, this guitar has seen little play. It shows no flaws of any significance and the frets show no observable wear. Even the pickguard and headstock show little evidence of prior play. Most shops could probably sell this as new if not for the 2011 serial number.

If you've been waiting for the right all -Mahogany 12-fret guitar to come along at a decent price, perhaps your wait is over. This is one sweet Martin!
