Description

*The initial purchaser of this guitar was unable to complete the layaway transaction and never took posession, so this instrument is again available for purchase.

The Martin OMM John Renbourn was built and named for one of the finest fingerstyle guitarists of the 20th century. The example offered here is #3 in this limited series, one of the very first built in 2011.

The design of this guitar reflects the artist's fondness for 14-fret Orchestra Model guitars and his use of both standard and alternate tunings. This guitar is 15-1/4" wide and 4-1/8" deep at the lower bout. It combines high-altitude Alpine Spruce for the top with highly figured Madagascar Rosewood for the back and sides. It has a 25-1/4" string scale, a 1-3/4" bone nut and 2-1/4" string spacing. The neck is Mahogany with an Ebony fretboard and the depth of the neck is .87" at the first fret increasing to .90" at the ninth. The cosmetics are a combination of traditional styling and custom aesthetics. The purfling and backstrip are herringbone and the rosette is composed of black/white/black inlays. The headstock inlay is a custom unicorn made of abalone, MOP and Micarta. Pentangle-shaped MOP inlays adorn the fretboard. It is equipped with engraved Golden Age side-mount tuners with Ivoroid buttons. The label of each guitar is numbered and signed by John Renbourn.

I am amazed at the output of this guitar. It is loud, open and quite warm in tone. The note to note clarity and definition is amazing. It is very responsive and the setup on this early example is superb, with 12th fret string heights of 5/64" on the low E side and 3/64" on the treble side.

While this guitar was one of the first of this limited run built, it's condition is nearly that of a new guitar. It is obvious that the original owner took extremely great care with this fine instrument. Only a few very light string change marks on the Ebony headstock overlay and some extremely light fret wear keep me from classifying the condition of this guitar as mint. It comes in it's original Martin/TKL case in similarly fine condition along with the original paperwork.

If a superb sounding, playing and highly collectible Martin acoustic appeals to you, this fabulous OM may be just what you are looking for. Highly recommended!
