Description

This MARTIN SWD SMARTWOOD dreadnought was made in the year 1998, judging from the serial number (663872). It is a Certified Wood Model, about 70 percent built from wood materials which originated in forests managed in a sustainable and ecologically responsible manner and certified by the FSC (The Forest Stewardship Council). It is a full dreadnought size, with a satin natural finish, a beautifully figured Sitka spruce top, and cherry back, sides, and neck. There is full body binding, top and back, gold enclosed Martin tuners, herringbone top purfling, and a multi-stripe tortoise soundhole rosette. The 20/14-fret fingerboard and bridge is made of katalox, (a dark-grained hardwood), and features pearl dot inlays, a tortoise plastic pickguard and peghead overlay, topped off with the gold foil Martin logo, which says it all.

As a Martin dreadnought, it has a 15-5/8" lower bout, a 25.4" scale, a 1-11/16" nut width, and 3-13/16" to 4-7/8" body depth, delivering typical Martin balance and power from this package. The modified narrow oval neck is extremely comfortable to play, with the action set up at a bit over 3/32” at the 12th fret low E. This is an excellent guitar, made entirely in the USA, with all the care the Nazareth, Pennsylvania, craftsmen are famous for.

There is a ½” ding in the top lower bout, evidence of a headstock repair, a seam crack behind the bridge, and three small cracks in the sides: all have been glued and cleated as needed. This work has clearly been done professionally, and the guitar at this point looks and plays virtually like new.

The black molded original hard shell case is in excellent condition, with soft green plush padding to ensure the safety of the instrument. All the hardware is nice and shiny and works perfectly, and the aluminum flange makes the case virtually airtight. Naturally, the quality of the case suggests and protects the quality of the Martin inside.

Buyer pays a flat rate of $55 for insurance and shipping to the lower 48 states; shipping costs elsewhere will be negotiated as necessary. Payment by Paypal is preferred; cashier’s checks are acceptable, but checks must clear before the guitar will be shipped.

I have made every effort to describe and illustrate this vintage Martin guitar and its case with scrupulous accuracy. Its return will not be accepted unless it can be shown that it was egregiously misrepresented in this listing. Please check out the pictures and ask any questions you might have before offering to purchase it.

Thank you for your interest in this fine Martin guitar.

Payments by Paypal, cashier’s checks, money orders, or personal checks are acceptable, but all payments must clear my bank before the guitar will be shipped. I will CONSIDER reasonable offers, even including installment payments and trade-ins, but generally since I already attempt to price my guitars very competitively, unusual deals must be unusually sweet.

From henceforth [that's how retired English teachers talk], insurance and shipping to the lower 48 states is $55 due to constantly rising shipping costs unless a specific listing says otherwise; shipping costs elsewhere will be negotiated as necessary. I have sold guitars to Russia, Japan, Australia, and over 50 other countries, as well as almost every state in the USA. Since some of my guitars travel thousands of miles, I take care to use lots of packing materials, protect the neck inside the case, and of course de-tune the strings.

I make every effort to describe and illustrate each guitar and case with scrupulous accuracy. However, many of my instruments are well-played vintage items which are many years old, and I am not a luthier. One should assume that any guitar will require some set-up to satisfy your personal requirements, and that not every flaw or ding will be seen/recognized/described in the listing. Thus the return of an instrument will not be accepted unless it can be shown that it was egregiously misrepresented in this listing. Please read the listing carefully, check out the pictures, and ask any questions you might have before offering to buy.
