SN: 170581. Sensational sounding and playing Roy McAlister Brazilian D-28 with an interesting back story. This started life as a 1959 Martin D-28 that sustained a serious impact injury to the top. The back and sides were unmolested. Roy’s original mission was simply to retop the guitar. But being the perfectionist he is, it became much more than that. Roy completely disassembled the guitar and rebuilt it with a sublime Adi top with forward X and scalloped bracing, small herringbone trim, new 30’s style ivoroid binding, and 30’s style repro bridge with through saddle. In the original ebony fingerboard Roy replaced the dots with 30’s style snowflakes. The Grover Roto-matics were replaced with high-quality G-98 reproductions. The result is quite special. The Brazilian back and sides are highly figured 60-year old boards with the original backstrip. They are CITES-certified pre-treaty which means it can be exported with the proper paperwork. The top is fine grain Adi from Roy’s stash with the slightest bear-clawing. The neck is original to the guitar with a modified V profile, the fast 1-11/16th” nut and 2 3/8th” spacing at the bridge. The tone is really lovely; big and fat with lots of overtones without being woofy or overpowering. If Martin was to build a custom BRW D-28 today the price might be upwards to $20K. Roy’s price for a similar model would be $12.5K. I’m pleased to be able to offer this instrument considerably under that. It comes with a new Cordoba case that is handsome and solid.
