Description

Offered for your consideration is this extremely cool T35 from Ken McKay. Ken builds high quality instruments in very small quantities in his Michigan shop and is best known for his ES-335 style replicas, which many folks consider to be far superior to those that come from Gibson.

As the model name suggests, the T35 combines the body shape of a Telecaster with many of the attributes of an ES-335. The body is 15-1/2" long and is 13" wide at the lower bout. It has a one-piece Mahogany body that has been chambered and topped with laminated Maple. It has a one-piece Mahogany neck that feels like it came right off of a Les Paul, with a 24-3/4" string scale and a chuncky C-shape with depth measurements of .89" at the first fret increasing up to .92" at the twelfth fret. It has a lovely Brazilian Rosewood fretboard with a 12" radius, medium frets and a 1.69" bone nut. It has an ABR-1 bridge and stop tailpiece. The electronics include two Bare Knuckle "Stormy Monday" humbuckers with aged covers, along with a volume control for each pickup, a master tone control and a three-way toggle switch. It is finished in tobacco sunburst nitrocellulose lacquer and weighs just 7.3 pounds. It is aged by Ken to what he calls his "under the bed" finish.

The combination of Tele, ES-335 and Les Paul attributes make this guitar strangely familiar and it is a pure joy to play. Its short scale and smaller body make it very comfortable to play and give it a more focused tone than you would get from an ES, but the Gibson roots are quite evident. Please listen to the brief sound sample included and I think you will agree.

This guitar shows a few cosmetic-only flaws which are pictured in my photos. Ken ages these at his shop, so it is hard to tell where his aging stops and the play wear begins, but the flaws are not significant and the frets remain in superb condition. The guitar comes in a high-quality black tweed case.

As my inventory shows, I'm a sucker for high quality semi-hollow electrics. I like the light weight and the more airy, woody tone that you typically get from semi-hollow instruments. If the idea of a very high quality, small bodied ES-335 appeals to you, then this McKay T35 has your name on it. Make it yours and you will be very glad you did!
