Description

Offered here is a seemingly unplayed McPherson 3.5 XPH built in 2012. This is a full-size instrument, but it's relatively shallow body makes it quite comfortable to play. The sound is huge, but you don't feel like you are playing a guitar with a 16" wide lower bout because the body depth tapers down from 4" at the neck joint to 3.5" at the tail.

The top, back and sides of this magnificent guitar are made of high grade Hawaiian Koa. The body and neck are bound with Black Ebony. The 25.5" scale length neck is made of Mahogany with a low profile, soft V-shape and depth measurements of .81" at the 1st fret and .85" at the 9th fret. The bound Ebony fretboard has a 14" radius and a 1.75" bone nut. The string spacing is 2-3/16" at the saddle. It has an Ebony bridge and comes with three (3) hand-cut bone saddles to accommodate various string heights and playing styles. The tuners are gold Waverly open backs. The guitar is factory-equipped with L.R. Baggs electronics including a built-in pre-amp and discrete sound hole mounted volume control.
The luthiers/engineers of McPherson Guitars have completely re-engineered the acoustic guitar with amazing results. While a host of improvements to the traditional guitar design have been made and a host of patents awarded, the most significant (and obvious) changes are the offset sound hole and the cantilevered neck joint. These changes significantly improve the sound board's ability to vibrate and also result in a neck that is much more stable and resistant to changes in temperature and humidity levels.

The tone of this beauty is big, incredibly well-balanced and articulate. It is a responsive guitar too, one that is equally proficient played with fingers or flat pick. The sleek neck shape is quite comfortable. The guitar is currently setup with the medium height saddle and Elixir 80/20 Lights and has ninth fret string heights of 6/64" and 5/64" on the low and high E sides, respectively.

While built in 2012, this beautiful guitar appears unplayed. I can't find a mark on it, but I will classify it's condition as near mint in the event I've missed something insignificant. The frets are in similarly mint condition and show no observable wear. It comes to you in it's original McPherson/Ameritage case equipped with humidification, along with the alternate bone saddles and paperwork.

A new example of this instrument in all Koa currently sells for (gulp!) $14K. Get this mint/near mint 2012 beauty for just over half that price.

The artists of various music genres who are playing McPherson guitars these days constitutes quite an impressive list. Try one and see why!
