Summary: Music Man described the Sabre bass as follows in their 1982 catalog:

"The Sabre bass offers tremendous flexibility to suit individual playing styles, action characteristics, and string selections. Incorporating many of the same quality features described with the Sting Ray, the Sabre bass is meticulously crafted to provide exceptional tonal range and control. As with the Sting Ray. each is registered, with the serial number stamped right on the bridge. The instrument body is also contoured to fit most players for greatest comfort. If the player takes a little time to master the various controls they will obtain a variety of sounds not available on other instruments.

This particular Sabre is finished in a beautiful natural gloss and it plays and sounds wonderful!

Body: Solid body ash double cutaway bass guitar

Neck: Rock maple neck with a maple fingerboard, 21 frets, 34” scale length, 1 7/16” nut width. The frets do show some wear & they could use a good polishing but they still have some life left in them & the instrument plays great. This bass has a 3-bolt neck with the skunk stripe going down the middle.

Pickups/Hardware: Two humbucking pickups with eight 3/8 inch magnets each - Pickups have height adjustment screws at each end to aid in obtaining balanced response - Low impedance of pickup winding preserves highs and adds upper register response. This bass has chrome hardware, open back “Music Man” tuning keys, 3 toggle switches, 2 volume knobs & one tone knob.

Cosmetics: This old bass does show lots of wear that is consistent with an instrument from the late 1970’s. The finish is checking in various places & I found several small dings on the bass. There is some buckle rash on the back & the finish has completely worn off in a few places.

Playability: This bass plays great – there is no buzzing or dead spots & the action is comfortable. This bass is currently set up with flatwound strings…..
