Single KMD 184 with SPDIF connection kit
Well, here we are again with another digital microphone system from Neumann. Neumann has been a front runner for all in one digital solutions for the studio as well as for live sound, and with the KMD series, Neumann has hit the nail on the head! Now I am not going to say that this is the system for everybody, but all you remote stereo recording or acoustic instrument enthusiasts out there should listen up. The system essentially is your choice of KM183, 184,185 (available in stereo sets or individual kits, as well as interchangeable capsule heads) that connects via AES or SPDIF to most any digital recording device with these available connections respectively. With the kit and battery pack this unit is so flexible for all you remote recording guys out there or it can be used in the studio with the optional DMI-2 digital interface with remote control capability via the RCS software included.
I would definitely have to say this system is pretty turn key! Getting it up and running with the software on my Mac was a piece of cake. My test included a single KMD184 connected AES/EBU into the DMI-2 digital interface connected SPDIF into my fire wire audio interface running Nuendo 2.0 recording a Martin acoustic guitar right off the twelfth fret. I was thoroughly impressed on how warm, lush, and creamy my acoustic guitar sounded with a couple strums of an E Chord. Enough top end and thick bottom end for a rock acoustic rhythm guitar part to stick perfectly in the mix.
The converters have wonderful midrange coloration that brings the life out of most any acoustic instrument that may lack body and space. With the optional RCS software the remote control has the ability to control everything from gain, low cut filters, compression and limiting and can be crucial in those situations where a small fix will improve the sound.

Optimal A/D conversion, especially developed synchronization technology and the capability of controlling standard microphone parameters and various integrated signal processing functions remotely ensure that Solution-D meets the most demanding professional audio production requirements. The basic technological principle is to permit recording with no "bottlenecks" associated with loss of signal quality.

The Solution-D digital microphone system is comprised of the following components:
A digital microphone (e.g. the D-01 large-diaphragm microphone or a KM D small-diaphragm microphone), the DMI-2 digital microphone interface and the RCS remote control software, which operates and remotely controls the microphone. A PC or Mac can serve as the control computer, which of course can simultaneously be used to operate the actual recording system, for instance.
The signal and data transmission of the microphone conform to the new AES 42 standard. The introduction of this standard governing the transmission of output signals, the supply of power and the remote control of microphones with digital outputs provided the necessary preconditions for the development of digital microphone technology. Neumann made a decisive contribution to the drafting of the AES 42 standard.
Instead of being used with the DMI-2, the KM D small-diaphragm microphones can alternatively be connected to the AES/EBU or S/PDIF interface of a recording system by means of a Connection Ki. However, if a Connection Kit is used, it is not possible to control the microphone functions remotely. Thus a control computer is not required. In this case, if it is necessary to synchronize several microphones, a sample rate converter must be used.
A Battery Pack is available as an option for use with the Connection Kit, thus permitting the small-diaphragm microphones to be used with portable recording equipment.
