Description

ffered here is a superb 2008 Nik Huber Orca, a high quality, hand-made, German-built, LP-style guitar. The Orca's shape and construction, a singly cutaway with a flame Maple top with Mahogany body and neck, is similar to the guitar it is modeled after, but the Orca's body is .5" thinner than an LP and it has a nice body contour that the LP lacks. Accordingly, the Orca is more comfortable to play and lighter in weight. This example weighs just 7.6 pounds and has been given a lovely two-tone Tobacco Sunburst lacquer finish. The string scale on this guitar is an even 25" versus the 24.5" scale of an LP. The Orca's neck is C-shaped with depth measurements of .90" at the first fret and 1.00" at the twelfth fret. The neck heel is nicely contoured for easy upper fret access. The gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood fretboard has a 14" radius, 6150 frets and a 1-5/8" bone nut. The headstock overlay, truss-rod cover and the buttons on the Schaller tuners are Ebony. Abalone inlays adorn the fingerboard dot markers and the headstock inlay. The light weight bridge and tail-piece are by Tone Pros. For electronics, the Orca has been given a pair of great sounding Haussel humbuckers along with a three-way switch, separate volume and tone controls for each pickup and a push/pull pot for splitting the coils in each pickup simultaneously.

This is a very resonant guitar and it's playability is superb. Intonation and tuning-stability are much better than I am used to with an LP-style guitar. The tone of the Orca is quite LP-like with a nicely balanced, fat humbucking sound. Activate the coil split and you get nice single coil sounds from each position of the three-way switch. This is a nice capability to have, although there is a bit of gain drop off when the push/pull is in use. The condition of this guitar is excellent. There is a touch of light buckle rash near the rear cavity (see photo),a few light string change scratches on the headstock overlay, and a touch of oxidation on the pickup covers, but otherwise this guitar is in very nice shape and the extra-hard frets are in marvelous condition. This lovely instrument comes with it's original hardshell case, the certificate of authenticity and tools. A new example of the Orca will set you back nearly $7.5K, but this marvelous example can be yours for a third less. A superb, boutique quality, alternative to the venerable LP. Make it yours today!
