Description

Summary: The UK II (Ultra Karman II) guitar features a hollow body aluminum frame encased in a mold of urelite, a dense urethane foam. The neck of the guitar was glued to the body and then bolted to the frame, so that along with the hollow body this would allow for maximum sustain. The pickups were custom-made by Ovation. Each coil was wound 10,000 times, more than most pickups, resulting in a high amplitude. The pickups also included switches that would switch the wiring in the pickups from in series to parallel, effectively turning the humbucker into a single coil in sound quality on the fly. The guitar also has a mono and a stereo output, where the stereo separated the two pickups into their own channels. It ships in its original brown hardshell case.

Body: This guitar features a hollow body aluminum frame encased in a mold of urelite, a dense urethane foam. This made the guitar light, and the hollowness gave it a very distinct sound. It has a black finish and an arched top and back.

Neck: It has a mahogany neck, brass nut, bound ebony fingerboard. It features fancy bow-tie pearl/ebony inlays. Nut Width- 1 11/16” Scale Length- 24 ¾”

Pickups/Hardware: The pickups were custom-made by Ovation. The twin-blade humbuckers each have a series/parallel switch to give you easy in/out of phase options, effectively turning the hum bucker into a single coil in sound quality on the fly – Otherwise, the controls are conventional, with separate volume and tone controls for each pickup. Each coil was wound 10,000 times, more than most pickups, resulting in a high amplitude. The guitar also has a mono and a stereo output, where the stereo separated the two pickups into their own channels. The massive bridge/tailpiece assembly was typical of Ovation’s later guitars and late-’70s notions about improving sustain. The guitar also has gold ovation tuning keys that feel very solid.

Cosmetics: This vintage Ovation is in good condition with normal signs of wear that is consistent with an instrument from the 1970's. There are some pick scratches on the top & some light buffing scratches on the body if you get up close. The back has a few light signs of buckle rash and the buffing scratches in the finish if you hold it up in the lights. There are a few small dings around the edges of the body & on the top of the headstock. The frets are in very good shape & have a lot of life left.

Playability: Our in-house guitar tech has just inspected, setup and restrung this guitar with a new set of 10s. The neck is straight, the truss rod is fully functioning and the action has been setup low and comfortable. The frets are in great shape with no major grooves or divots from use and it plays beautifully up and down the fingerboard with no dead spots or choking out.
