Description

Offered for your consideration is a Pirate brand "Triple 0" built by young luthier Andy Armstrong who is based in Bozeman, Montana. An article I read about the budding Pirate brand of guitars impressed me enough to get me to invest in a couple of Andy's handmade instruments for our inventory. After playing his guitars, I predict Andy is destined for great things!

Andy's "Triple 0" serial number 0101621 offered here is an 000/OM sized instrument with a 15" wide lower bout. It has 14-fret neck with a short string scale (24.9"), a 1-3/4" bone nut and 2-5/16" string spacing. This one has a torrefied Sitka Spruce top matched with Honduran Mahogany for the back, sides and neck. The neck shape reminds me of a very soft Martin "modified V" and has depth measurements of .865" at the first fret increasing to .945" at the ninth fret. The fingerboard, bridge and headstock overlay are made of Madagascar Rosewood. The fingerboard binding is Brazilian Rosewood. The body is bound in ivoroid with herringbone top trim. It has aged nickel Waverly tuners with Ebony buttons and the saddle, nut, string and end pins are all made of bone. Andy finishes his guitars with ultra thin nitro lacquer. Top notch materials were used throughout!

Andy is said to have trained briefly with luthier Kevin Kopp, among others and his guitars are of extremely high quality. Similar to a Kopp guitar, Andy's building techniques and his choice of materials and finishes give his instruments a decidedly vintage vibe with a tone to match the vibe. Please check out my brief sound sample of this 000 in action; it sounds warm and woody like an old Martin to my ears. It plays smooth and easy and is setup nicely with light gauge strings and 12th fret string heights of 6/64" on the low E side and 4/64" on the high side.

This guitar has seen only brief test play and is essentially new with no flaws of any significance, frets included. Andy ships his precious works in high quality TKL cases. The uninstalled bone end pin and case keys are included.

It is obvious that Andy Armstrong has a real passion for building fine acoustic instruments. He builds them by hand and in very small quantities (one per month or thereabouts I'm told). If he can make the economics work, I know he will be successful down the road. Get yourself an early example of this young luthier's work at a terrific price. Just click the 'Buy Now' button and make this beauty yours. You will be very glad you did!
