Description

Regal Stencil Guitar c 1925 | $675 | This is an unlabeled catalog guitar, typical of those produced in the teens through the twenties. The stencil work and colorful purfling lead us to believe it is Chicago-made in the Regal factory sometime in the twenties. Overall, it's a nifty little concert-size guitar in excellent original condition. Not a top of the line instrument, by any means, but there were cheaper guitars than this one on the market.

The top is solid spruce. The sides appear to be solid mahogany, while the back looks like a mahogany laminate. The ladder-braced top is finished off with colorful purfling (a style often seen on Regal instruments). white celluloid and a burgundy and green floral stencil. The bridge and fingerboard are dyed maple. The neck looks to be basswood or poplar. Tuners, nut and bridge pins appear to be original to the guitar.

The guitar has had a recent neck reset and the frets leveled and dressed. There are a few old repairs including two top cracks, and some regluing of the back/sides. A 2" piece of missing binding was filled in at the bottom of the lower bout.

The lower bout measures 13". The scale length is 24 1/8" and the neck measures 1 13/16" across at the nut and is carved in a typical 'V' of the period. String spacing is 2 3/16" across at the saddle.

Action is set at 5 & 6/64". The guitar plays easily, is light as a feather and the unique combination of tone woods combine to make this a really wonderful sounding instrument .. much better that one would think it 'should' sound. It's warm and woody, quite resonant and has good sustain.

Comes with a soft case.
