Retrofret Stock # 6352. Supertone New Professional Model 5 String Banjo, most likely made by Rettberg and Lange, c. 1915, probably New York City, serial # 418, natural finish, spunover rim, maple neck. Overall length is 35 1/2 in. (90.2 cm.), 10 3/4 in. (27.3 cm.) diameter head, and 2 1/2 in. (6.4 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 26 in. (660 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1/4 in. (32 mm.). This banjo has wear overall, most notably to the back of the neck- in the lower positions it is worn down to the wood. The plating is worn on the hooks and scuffed on the rim but substantially intact. The Champion friction pegs are the correct period units, but there were guitar-style tuners on at some point, and the small screw holes for them remain. The fifth string peg is newer, but the proper style, and the tailpiece is a nice original No-Knot with one stud missing. The elegant original hooks and nuts are original except for one. Despite its Sears & Roebuck origins this is a fairly classy banjo, with lovely colored abalone inlay and good quality woods. This is an easy player with a fairly sweet sound, set up with an old skin head and newer bridge. Overall Very Good + Condition.
