2022 Rickenbacker 4005XC, 90th Anniversary Amber FireGlo
To be honest, I've struggled with Rickenbacker basses my entire playing life. Their wide-ish, flat necks played havoc with my medium-sized mitts, which were born and raised on the mighty Fender Jazz bass. That said, this 4005 surprised me with its playability and comfortableness. If you are playing a passage with plenty of F notes on the low "E" string and your hands and wrists aren't hurting after five minutes, you've got a winner. The tone is what I would call "nice and woody" and cuts through in fine fashion. So, this bass passed our tests and tryouts with flying colors.
This bad boy weighs in at 8 lbs, 2 oz and is very well-balanced. The full-width, crushed-pearl inlays, checkerboard binding and toaster top pickups all harken back to the glorious, vintage days of Rickenbacker. The condition is exceptional- I find it interesting that some folks will describe an instrument as "mint," which, in my opinion is a condition that does not exist. Nothing is truly perfect and I've had one client that put one of our instruments under an L.E.O. Electron microscope to find a tiny flaw that we missed. The condition of this 4005 is pretty close, though and we can find no signs of playwear. It's clean with no excuses and that's the way we like 'em around here in the Elk cave.
