From the collection of a phenomenal local player (and former Suhr endorsee) comes this equally phenomenal 2014 Classic Antique S Custom!
One of the things we're really digging about this Classic S is how vintage it feels. There is a decidedly early 60s Strat feel, down to the factory installed Fender vintage-style bridge and 60s inspired Suhr V60LP pickups, which is not what we've come to expect from John Suhr. John has long been known as one of the masters of modern electrics and his guitars typically reflect that via their luxurious, modern feel and ultra-precise build quality.
To have that same level of attention to detail and skill be turned towards a more vintage inspired guitar is a really great thing in our book. All the things we love about old Strats are here, they've just been subtly improved upon via larger frets, compound radius, and better upper fret access thanks to a deeper cutaway (see pics of guitar's back) to name a few.
As expected, the tones are more old-school as well. The Suhr V60LP pickups use a proprietary winding process that replicates the hand-wound pattern of the early 60s Strat pickups ultimately resulting in a sweeter / rounder top-end response. Simply put, they sound fantastic. Plenty of cluck and bell-like chime that sound great either clean or overdriven.
We sometimes waffle back and forth from wanting a vintage guitar to wanting a modern take on those classics. Both have their merits to be sure, but when you cross paths with a guitar like this you know it may just be possible to have the best of both worlds - old school feel, looks, and tone coupled with modern build quality and improvements. We're sold!
