Here we have a sweet sounding Thormahlen A-style mandolin made in Corvallis, Oregon, about ninety miles south of Portland. It was made in 2002 by world-class folk instrument maker, Dave Thormalen, who specializes in 34-36 string, levered folk harps in the $4K to $6K range. In addition to harps, Dave also makes a limited number of custom guitars and mandolins. Check out his website for more information about his array of custom instruments.
This mandolin is in good condition notwithstanding honest playwear, some finish blemishes, and a couple of minor top cracks. Maple back and sides with Ivoroid-bound Spruce top. Beautiful Maccassar Ebony headstock overlay.
The mandolin was recently inspected, adjusted, and set up at Eastside Guitar Repair here in Portland. The bridge and tailpiece were moved slightly for intonation and playability. There is a small spot of unfinished top visible next to the bridge due to the adjustment. It could easily be touched up, but we’ll leave that decision to the new owner.
The mandolin is equipped with an undersaddle pickup and clamp-on quarter inch output jack. It sounds real nice. Comes with a black tolex hardshell case with brass hardware in good working order. All in all, this is a great player-grade, hand-crafted instrument that you can play at home, in a jam, or on-stage with a band. A very cool mandolin from one of Oregon’s most talented luthiers.
