Offered is this very special Thorn Socal R/S by luthier genius Ron Thorn. Until recently Ron made a variety of high-end electrics under the Thorn brand and and has long been known for his incredible inlay work. His guitars are works of both sonic and visual art. Earlier this year, however, Ron took a job as Principal Masterbuilder with the Fender Custom Shop. Guitars like this beauty are quickly becoming collector items.
The R/S is obviously Ron's take on a Stratocaster-style instrument. Never content with the typical, however, Ron gave this beautiful and unique guitar some special touches. Key specifications for this magnificent guitar include: a Swamp Ash body with a very thin custom Bronze Swirl finish; a quartersawn Maple neck with a fat C-shape and depth measurements of .880" at the first fret and .980" at the twelfth fret; a flamed Maple fretboard which has been torrefied and stained to look and feel like Rosewood, with a 10" radius; medium/jumbo (.095 x .047) fret wire and Mastadon ivory inlays; a 1.670" tusq nut; a Thorn hardtail bridge; locking vintage style tuners; a gold anodized aluminum pickguard; and for electronics, Thorn/Lollar "Blackface" single coil pickups with VTT and a five-way switch. This lovely piece has a total weight of just 7.6 pounds.
This is a masterbuilt-quality, one-off instrument. In terms of playability and tone, it kills most any Strat-style instrument you are going to find in this price range. Listen to the provided Soundcloud sample and I think you will agree, the tone of this instrument is magnificent. Ron sweats the details when it comes to building his guitars. For example, check out the unique neck to body joint system Ron engineered for his bolt-neck guitars. Ron's design makes for a rock solid joint that maximizes stability, tone and resonance. Every detail of Ron's guitars is superbly engineered and crafted with similar care. This instrument is a superb playing and sounding piece of luthier art.
Built in 2015, this guitar remains in excellent condition. If you look at the finish under intense lighting you will find a few tiny impressions which I was unable to capture in my close up photos. These flaws are very hard to find, particularly with this unique finish. In all other respects, this guitar is in near mint condition, frets included. It comes in it's original faux alligator G&G case with the paperwork and tools.
If the idea of a masterbuilt quality S-style guitar at a team-build price sounds good to you, then this lovely Thorn R/S should appeal to you. Make this lovely, one-of-a-kind instrument yours today. There aren't any more coming from Ron Thorn except those with a Fender logo on them.
