Cofounded by Aerosmith’s Brad Whitford, renowned guitar tech Greg Howard (who works with Aerosmith, Green Day, and Linkin Park, among others), and former Blockhead Amps mastermind Ossie Ahsen, 3 Monkeys is one of the most buzzedabout amp-makers around. The company’s latest offering—the limited-edition Virgil—is a 30-watt, two-channel, (4)6V6-powered amp based on the Hiwatt-meets-Marshall BW119 that 3 Monkeys designed for Whitford in 2006. It’s also an amp that’s turning up in the rigs of such tone zealots as Steely Dan’s Walter Becker (who rocks a sweet surf-green model)—an early sign that 3 Monkeys is on to another winner.

This is Walter Beckers stage played Three Monkeys Virgil. I don't know how many they made but you simply never see them for sale. I saw Steely Dan in 2016 and this distinctive surf green head was front and center. It's a loud amp with a pretty sophisticated boost circuit. I find it pretty Marshall JMP like but that could be because I've got it hooked up to a vintage Marshall half stack cabinet. Even if this wasn't Walter Becker's amp, it's a really excellent amp. I don't do modern/boutique-I'm a vintage guy but this amp checks all the boxes for me. No reverb, no tremolo, just beautiful cleans and that boost circuit for all the dirt you could possibly want. Comes with the road case used on the Steely Dan tours (with a big ol' sticker to prove it) They only made 25 of these-this is number 9. More photos coming.
