Tracy Cox is a spectacular luthier and even more spectacular at ultra-intricate inlay work. Tracy has done inlay for Martin on their $100K-200K guitars, and there is none finer. We have sold many of his guitars in the past; some of you may have seen them in these pages. This particular instrument is unusual for M/ Cox, a parlor-size instrument with a body shape based on an 1894 Washburn that he owns, taken up many, many notches. The back and sides are of select cocobolo with maple bindings, the top of the finest Adirondack spruce; both the top and fingerboard are paua-shell bordered, with traditional diamonds-and-squares fingerboard inlay. On the peghead is an intricate tree with abalone leaves. It was the third piece from a set that was cut for guitars that Tracy was making for Russell Crowe and Jorma Kaukonen, and was saved for this guitar. The understring pickguard was based on one from an old Martin 0045, which he replicated for the Martin Custom Shop; per Tracy…..”I thought it was a cool throwback”. This is one of the sweetest-sounding and playing parlor guitars we have ever seen, both old and new, regardless of maker. It is understated (for Tracy Cox), gorgeously fancy without being gauche, actually a fairly simple one for him, and priced extremely low, in order, as Tracy put it, ”..to get one of my guitars into the hands of the public at a working man’s price”. We’re in love with it here. $2795 w/hsc
