Up for sale, a 1960's Univox Violin bass in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. With the popularity of the Beatles soaring in the mid-60s, Japan filled an ever growing market for cosmetically similar instruments to Paul McCartney's visually and tonally iconic Hofner 500/1 bass with instruments such as this Univox. With its fully hollow body, spruce top, and figured maple back and sides, this Univox is both very eye-catching and tonally pleasing, with a warm, thumpy tone that has great top end content and plenty of detail. And at only 6lbs 2oz, this is a particularly light instrument that balances well on a strap. Currently strung with roundwound strings, this Univox has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar and dialed in for optimal action and intonation.

The neck has a chunky C shaped profile that is very comfortable and easy to play, given the short scale and slender 1 9/16" nut width. Since the fretboard stays consistent in width when moving up the fretboard (just like a Hofner), the depth of the C profile helps to give the bass a substantial and solid feel. The original frets are intact and in exceptional condition, showing no notable wear with well rounded crowns. The neck is straight and the bass plays very well all the way up the rosewood fretboard, which also features aged white binding and pearloid dot inlays. On the headstock, the original raised "Univox" badge is present, and the stock chrome tuning machines still hold pitch well.

All of the electronics work as they should, with a small rectangular control plate that further references a Hofner in overall aesthetic design. Controls include on/off switches for each pickup as well as a tone switch and Master Volume and Tone knobs. The original amber Univox knobs are present, as well as the original pickguard, floating rosewood bridge, wooden finger rest, and chrome trapeze tailpiece. All of the hardware is in excellent shape and the original three-tone sunburst finish is vibrant and unfaded. Cosmetically, the bass is as clean as the photos show it to be, with some gorgeous birdseye figuring in the maple on the back of the bass. There are some light finish chips on the back lower bout edge of the instrument near the strap button, as well as faint wear along the headstock edges and light buckle rash on the back which doesn't go through the finish. On the top of the instrument, there are a few tiny marks of wear as well, mostly located near the bridge pickup.

This Univox bass is 100% original and complete, with a professional setup and comfortable action.
