1931 Washburn 5237 Rosewood Grand Concert

Washburn crafted some of the most elegant early steel string guitars in
their Chicago factory. This model 5237 is a 00 sized rosewood Grand Concert
acoustic. You’ll find it in the 1930 Tonk Brothers mail order catalog as
“The Aristocrat” for $75, beautifully appointed to rival a Martin 00-21 or
00-28 at the time.

With excellent build quality, unique styling, and exceptional tone, vintage
Washburns from this era appeal to players and collectors alike. The X braced
Adirondack Spurce top measures over 14″ wide across the lower bout, with
East Indian Rosewood back and sides. Traditional 24 3/4″ scale length with
12 frets to the body and 1 7/8″ nut width – all very similar to a
contemporary Martin 00.

This rare Washburn is completely original, including the original bridge,
bridge plate, and nut. Fine patina has developed over the original French
polished finish. The fancy engraved Waverly machine heads still work quite
well. You’ll admire the lovely pearl inlaid Washburn logo and large slotted
pearl diamonds on the rich ebony fingerboard. The ornate headstock shape,
bound fretboard, and “smile” bridge all make this guitar stand out as
something special.

David Hatchard reglued the bridge and performed his usual top quality neck
reset and setup work on the guitar for an oustanding feel with low action.
It makes for a rewarding fingerstyle instrument with a sweet voice that can
still stand up to flatpicking when desired. Several cracks on the back and
one on the side have been repaired. This old Washburn should need no further
work for you to enjoy playing some Vintage Licks.
