At Telluride Music Co., we are honored to be an Authorized Dealer of Waterloo guitars, made in Austin, Tx., by Collings guitars. ince Bill Collings unveiled the Waterloo guitars in 2014, there’s been quite a buzz throughout the industry. These prewar-inspired instruments evoke the sound, feel and look of the affordable, workingman’s small-body guitars of the 1930s. This WL-14X (serial #640) features a solid Spruce top that is X-braced to provide articulate response and a wide dynamic range. Its Mahogany back and sides provide a dry warmth and woody resonance—a sound very true to the inexpensive blues boxes of the ’30s. We ordered this one with the “Small Neck” option, so it has a 1-11/16″ nut width and a slightly shallower neck profile with a more rounded V at open position. It’s still a substantial neck, but many players will find it more comfortable and faster than the standard neck. We always order Waterloos with truss rods. Even though some players like the authenticity of the T-bar, we think being able to adjust the action and relief in the neck is an important innovation of modern guitars. Like all of the Waterloos we’ve seen, the fit and finish are immaculate. There’s nothing quite like the match of a good sunburst and a tiger-stripe pickguard.
