SN: 274. Magical 2002 build by master builder and world-class player Wayne Henderson of Rugby, VA. It’s a unique instrument even for Wayne. The top is a handsome dark sunburst of Adirondack spruce with almost a walnut hue to it perhaps reminiscent of the Martin “mud bursts” of 1934. It’s trimmed with herringbone and bound in ivoroid. The 28-style rosette is complemented by a 42-style abalone inlay. The pickguard is a 30’s style faux tortoise, the bridge ebony with some tiger striping, Wayne’s signature crescent-design bridge pin configuration and subtle scalloping of the edge of the belly. The rosewood sides are stained dark like the top whereas the back is stained in a more traditional way to show off the figuring. The back is bound in ivoroid with colorful center strip. The neck is mahogany carved to a modified V with a volute and cap and gold plated Waverly machines. The bound ebony fretboard has 42-style inlays and then some. The headstock has a super cool 45-style flowerpot with W. C. Henderson banner in abalone. The nut is just shy of 1 ¾ (probably 1 23/32” if I could measure that close) and the string spacing is 2 1/8” so it is set up for fast picking. This special instrument was built for a family friend as you might suspect. It is something of a famous guitar in the Northwest as Wayne used this guitar almost exclusively at the Northwest Guitar Workshops where he taught regularly. It was passed around at jams and has a few little nicks here and there to prove it. In 2005 Wayne recorded “Made & Played” in Bellingham, WA using this guitar and has played many of his shows in the Northwest with it. I’ve had people tell me I should buy it myself and tuck it away but it is not a guitar to tuck away but is one to be played, shared and enjoyed.
