Hermann Weissenborn is best known for the hollow-neck Hawaiian slide guitars built in his Los Angeles shop between 1915 and 1937. He also made a small number of Spanish guitars with round necks set up to play in the standard way. This rare Style A Spanish guitar appears designed to compete with Martin’s 0-18K model. They were introduced about the same time and share many features.
The body and neck are made entirely from Hawaiian Koa wood. The lower bout measures 13 3/4″ across. Scale length is 25″ with 12 frets to the body.
You’ll enjoy the wonderful setup, with 12th fret action 5/64″ on the high E and 8/64″ on the low E using the original wire saddle. The X-braced top is completely flat and stable with no trouble standing up to steel strings. All luthier work done by a well known major shop including neck reset, refret and an added popsicle brace to protect the upper bout. The only crack runs along the grain of the Koa on the treble side of the lower bout – it has been glued and cleated. The guitar plays effortlessly with plenty of thump and volume, great for fingerstyle but can stand up to hard strumming.
The original bridge is the same distinctive shape as the Hawaiian guitars, made from maple stained brown with an abalone dot inlaid in the center. A previous owner added four small diamond inlays to the headstock to personalize his Weissenborn – the guitar is otherwise original including the tuners, nut, and bridge. The delicate original finish has crackled with age but the sound is more vibrant than ever.
Entire body of selected Koa. Fingerboard of perfect scale and of selected ebondy artistically marked with pearl position dots and fretted with genuine German silver frets. Soundhole surrounded with three rings of inlay. Finish of the highest grade and hand-rubbed to a gloss. Depth of body, 4 inches.
